Studies on Tulip (tulipa gesneriana L.) Forcing

Roh Seung-Moon

Abstract
This experiment was initiated to study the growth and flowering responses influenced (a) by the differences of the bulb sources-new bulbs, grown for one year, and old bulbs, grown for 10 years in Korea after being imported-and (b) by the different bulb cold temperature treatment. The objective of this study was to find the fact that old bulbs can be forced as effectively as new bulbs when optimum and best bulb programming temperature treatments could be developed when tulip is forced in a non-heated greenhouse.
Regardless of the bulb sources and temperature treatments, ¢¥Red Matador¢¥ cultivar did not Bower when bulb received up to 10 weeks of 5¡É and 9¡É temperature treatment. `Apeldoorn¢¥, ¢¥General Eisenhower¢¥, ¢¥Golden Apeldoorn¢¥, and `President Kennedy¢¥ cultivars flowered and the difference in flowering time between the new and the old bulbs was not significant, when forcing the bulb in a nun-heated greenhouse as a cut Bower.
The best bulb temperature treatment concerning the flowering date and other responses such as stem length and size of bulbs which can be forced in the subsequent year was a 6 weeks of 5¡É followed by 3 weeks of 9¡É regardless of the bulb sources.
Therefore, it is concluded that bulbs which have been grown in Korea for more than 10 years can be successfully forced when optimum bulb temperature treatments are given.
